Last week, we were on hand to celebrate a very special day in Christopher’s young life. \u00a0His parents, Carol and Scott, threw a party to mark his first birthday, or Tol<\/a>, an important Korean tradition. \u00a0Christopher’s older siblings, Chase and Lotte, enjoyed mingling with family and friends before the\u00a0toljabee<\/em>, the main celebration. \u00a0Many types of food were served, and the table was also set with “a large spool of thread, a brush, a\u00a0Korean calligraphy\u00a0set, a pencil, a book, money (10,000-won<\/em>\u00a0bills) and a\u00a0bow and arrow\u00a0(or a needle, ruler and pair of scissors for girls).”<\/a> \u00a0Whatever the baby picks up is said to predict his future, and\u00a0Christopher took a very long time in contemplating his choices at the table, finally settling on a paintbrush. \u00a0Taking photos of the birthday child is an important part of the modern\u00a0tol<\/em>,\u00a0and we were happy to oblige!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
