3 Things That Will Never Change About High School

Everyone has their memories of high school -the good, the bad, and the ugly- and it seems like people’s opinions on that stage of life fall on either one end of the spectrum or the other. Either high school was the time of your life or the time of your life you wish you could forget. No matter what your feelings are around those four years, there are a few consistent themes in every high school:

1. Not everyone can hang with the cool kids. Every high school has their popular crew: the cheerleaders, the jocks, the kids that just fit it….And some of us – like myself – were nerds. (If you are not sitting at the cool lunch table…you probably fall into the nerd category. It’s okay – one day you will grow up to be a great writer and those memories of getting stuffed into lockers will start to fade as you bask in your incredible wealth and stunning good looks. Fingers crossed…)

2. If you are not aware of what’s cool and don’t follow the social acceptability guidelines set forth by the people who are cooler than you dictated by the people who are older than you, you can lose your social status in the blink of an eye or the drop of an uncool bomb.

Example:
Me: Hey everyone. What did you guys do this weekend?
Everyone: We went to the Ariana Grande concert. It was hella dope.
Me: Wow! That sounds totally rad. I just got tickets to see One Direction for my birthday. Does anyone wanna go?
Everyone: Oh my god. Did you just say One Direction? We are totally over One Direction. One Direction is for, like, middle schoolers. Ew. Ratchet. You just totally gave me a cringeattack.

3. Your life totally changes when you get your driver’s license. Regardless of what your high school experience was, who doesn’t remember the excitement they felt about turning sixteen? The anticipation of getting your driver’s license, driving your friends around with the music on and your windows down, and that first real taste of independence and freedom….killer memories.

Trying to figure out who you are and where you are going all while keeping track of the endless list of totally cool and absolutely NOT cool clothes, trends, and pop culture can be exhausting. Take a lesson from the awesome high school kids we hung out with this weekend. Sometimes it’s okay to just kick back, relax, and have some fun. You’ll have plenty of time to look cool later.
