Popular Photography Practices
One of today’s Popular Photography Practices are Photo Booths! They seem to be on the rise! They continue to capture our most precious moments after nearly a century despite the popularity of ‘photo friendly’ apps. What makes the use of photo booths so popular? Albuquerque Shutterbooth goes behind the lens to find out!
A Little Photo History
Where did the use of the photo booth begin? There is likely nothing more magical, timeless, or classic than a beginning on Broadway! In 1925 Siberian immigrant, Anatol Josepho, introduced the Photomaton.
The photo booth had its first taste of popularity in 1953 when Hollywood star, Fred Astaire, sat for a photo! It has become an increasingly popular photography practice since!
Why The Buzz?
What makes photo booths all the rage in a world where snap chat and Instagram thrive? Well…
- Intimacy – Photo booths create an intimate space. Couples, friends, and even groups find themselves having to get close for the picture perfect photo op.
- Instant Access – Photos taken in a photo booth allow participators to receive their photographs immediately following the experience. There is no wait! There is no hour to several hours long way for film development.
- Timeless – This generation as well as previous generations can enjoy all the joy photo booths have to offer. It is an experience for all ages!

Holiday Blues: Holiday Survival Guide
Not sure how you will survive the holidays? Got a case of the holiday blues? Dr. Holiday is in the house! Albuquerque Shutter Booth presents a Holiday Blues: Holiday Survival Guide that will see you through this busy time of year.
How To Survive The Holidays
Whether it is decorating, buying gifts, holiday parties, or dinners here are some simple guidelines to make the holidays bright.
- Be flexible with your holiday decorations. Do not focus your efforts on holiday decorum specifically designed for just any one holiday. When putting together your holiday decorations try to incorporate items that can be used the whole year round. Glass candle holders, jars, or unscented electric candles can be perfect for any occasion with the application of ribbons and brightly colored candies as well as beads!
- Escape when you can. When attendance over the holidays becomes mandatory or feels like an obligation arrive early enough to make yourself comfortable. Stay long enough to catch up and after making an appearance, excuse yourself. Making small talk and saving face sometimes is just enough to make a friend, family member, or co-worker happy.
- Keep the spirit of giving alive by making a list to help you organize your holiday shopping list. When you are thinking of starting your holiday shopping, make a list of people you know. Next to them write what you want to get them. If you are not sure, write down some of their hobbies or interests.

A Bountiful Meal: Thanksgiving 2016
A bountiful meal is not complete without some classic Thanksgiving favorites! Grab your forks, knives, and plates! Fill your plates with some of these popular holiday recipes.
Gobbling Good Turkey
Gobble Gobble! A Thanksgiving dinner just simply would not be complete without its centerpiece. Roasted, barbecued, or fried one thing never changes… a finger licking good bird!
If you love more of the southern flavor, then you would love a juicy, FireBird! It is a family recipe I refer to as the ‘Alcoholic Turkey.’ To make this delectable poultry featurette, you will need:
- 1 Onion (chopped)
- 1 Green Bell Pepper (chopped)
- 1 12oz Can of Lager (beer)
- 2 Whiskey Shots
- 1 Tsp Onion Powder
- 2 Tsp Cajun Seasoning
- 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- Brine turkey the previous night in beer, onion, garlic, and bell pepper. Remove the neck and giblets for gravy! Sit turkey for 12 hours in the brine.
- Remove turkey from brine and pad gently to dry. Place brine to the side. Apply the rest of the spices liberally under the turkey skin.
- Preheat oven to 400.
- Place the turkey UPSIDE DOWN onto cooking rack. Pour the leftover brine into the opening. Pour whiskey the same.
- Wrap cooking tray in foil. Cook until golden brown, basting bird occasionally during cooking.
Tasty Side Dishes
The turkey may take the spotlight, however, it would not make much of a dinner featurette without some delightful costars!

A Picture Of Life and Death: The Origins Of Halloween Colors
Two colors immediately come to mind at the reference of Halloween. Those colors are none other than orange and black. What is the significance of these colors in regards of Hallow’s Eve? That is the question Albuquerque Shutterbooth is eager to unearth!
It’s A Monster Masterpiece
Orange, black, red, green, to even purples have been seen gracing the doorsteps of various Halloween celebrators. Every color has its own ghastly meaning.
Regarded as a color of life, bounty, strength, as well as endurance orange celebrates the Autumn Harvest.
As Halloween is regarded as a holiday in which honors the dead, black is often associated with darkness and death.
Gore would not be gore without the crimson red color of blood. Vampire have become quite the spectacle since Stoker’s “Dracula” hit the shelves and film. Red could not be more menacing!
Everything slimy, gross, ectoplasmic, or ghoulish is drearily green! A monster would not have the proper complexion without a grotesquely green face!
The mysterious, the unexplained, and the supernatural are all summed up in this royally spooktacular color! Purple is the perfect halloween color if you are looking to cast a spell!
Would You Believe?
Light is to dark as yin is to yang. Would you believe it if you were told that orange and black are indeed opposites? Orange is a color that reflects the beauty of life during the harvest season. Whereas black, on the other hand, is a bleak hue that is familiarized with death, evil spirits, well as the underworld.

Hallowed Halloween Traditions
Hallowed Halloween traditions, the practice of trick -or-treating and adorning ghoulish costumes are popularly accepted celebratory actions that mark this delightfully eerie holiday. What though of perhaps some of the more unnatural? Some of the most gusto and truly unusual Halloween traditions are all around us, we need only dare to look!
The Strange, The Weird, and Downright Unusual
Hiding Knives: In Germany, Halloween is regarded as a time in which the veil between the world of the living and the dead is weakened. So it can be assumed, that a number of the dead may return and walk among the living for this brief time. Playing on the side of caution, all knives are hidden away to ensure the safety of both the living and the dead.
Chairs By The Fireside: On Halloween in the Czech Republic chairs are placed by the fireplace. One chair is placed for each of the living relatives in the family as well as those who have deceased.
Get Into The Spirit!
Hallow’s Eve would be not much of a celebration without some Halloween spirit!
All Soul’s Procession: A journey of 100,000 souls takes place on Halloween in Tucson Arizona. Similar to “Dia de los Muertos,” this procession honors the lives of those who are no longer among the living. Participants of this event are encouraged to adorn masks, costumes, and floats that honor the dead.
Zombie Crawl: Denver Colorado’s Zombie Crawl brings “The Walking Dead” to life! The undead sweep the nation, or at least the 16th Street Mall in this annual Zombie dash, walk, or crawl!

Labor Day: A Celebration of Work and Achievement
The annual celebration of work and achievement, Labor Day, has some rather bleak beginnings. Over 100 years ago this holiday originated at the peak of the Industrial Revolution. It is at this time that workers united and took a stand in order to obtain some well earned comforts as well as rewards.
Industrialization and the Working World
The Industrial Revolution sparked advances in the the systems of communication, banking, and transportation. The very manner in which work was carried out also began to change during this time. Work during this era, clock in for an average of 60 to 70 hours a week. Laborers sweated in grueling 12 hour shifts and were often subject to rather harsh conditions.
Why Do We Celebrate Labor Day?
The harsh and sometimes unsafe conditions in which the laborers worked did not allot for time off or good pay. In fact, it was these same dismal circumstances that brought a number of workers to rise up together to take action.
In other words, Labor Day is a celebration of worker’s appreciation. Had laborers not gathered or formed unions, employees today would likely not have pay raises, days off, retirement, sick leave, or vacation time.
Fascinating Labor Day Facts
- Labor Day’s founder is a subject of controversy as it is believed that either Peter J. McGuire or Matthew Maguire is responsible for the creation of this holiday.
- While Labor Day is a National Holiday, not everyone gets time off.
- The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882.
