Old Glory, A Symbol Of Independence

Old glory is a grand old flag. What do her stars, stripes, and colors mean? To commemorate this 4th of July, Albuquerque Shutterbooth explores the color and pattern of the American Flag.

 Red, White, and Blue

Would you believe that red, white, and blue were not officially America’s colors until  1782?! It was six years after America declared its independence that it applied meaning and formally adopted the colors of red, white, and blue.

Red represents hardiness and valor.

White signifies purity as well as innocence.

Blue  stands for vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

 Stars and Stripes

Alongside the color selection, the stars and stripe pattern upon Old glory also have meaning.

The star is believed to be a symbol of the heavens. It is written inside The House of Representatives’ book of 1777 that ….. “The star is a symbol of the heavens and the divine goal to which man has aspired from time immemorial; the stripe is symbolic of the rays of light emanating from the sun.”

The stars are also a representation of the individual states in America.

The red and white stripes signify the original 13 British colonies that settled in America.

Open To Interpretation?

The colors and overall  layout of the American flag has been and remain subject to speculation.

Some believe  the adoption of red,  white, and blue were inspired by their former homeland also to represent America’s succession from their home country.
